Afyon Karahisar





This enchanting 16-days  train journey criss-crosses Turkey from Istanbul to İzmir. In Kayseri you interrupt the train journey with a visit to Cappadocia. From Denizli you can take an excursion to Pamukkale and Selçuk is a good base for visiting the Ancient and impressive ruins of Ephesus. Enjoy this journey steeped in diversity, history and natural splendor.


Day 1. Arrival in Istanbul.

Day 2. Istanbul .

Explore the city  on your own.

Day 3. Istanbul-Ankara train.

Transfer to  train station in Istanbul for day train to Ankara ( high speed train 5 hrs)

Explore Ankara on your own. The museum of Anatolian civilizations, castle and Mausoleum of Atatürk are among the highlights.

Day 4.  Ankara- Kayseri train.

As the train to Kayseri leaves 17.55 hrs you can spend a whole day in Ankara or book an extra excursion to the remains of Gordion.

Gordion was the capital of Ancient Phrygia and it is here that Alexander the Great cut the proverbial knot and opened the way to Asia. Explore the site on your own (2-3 hrs)

On return in Ankara check in on the Doğu Express train to Kayseri ( dept. 17.55 hrs) The train arrives very early in the morning at about 1.30 hrs at the station in Kayseri. Your hotel is near.

Day 5. Kayseri – Cappadocia.

After visit to the museum of Seljuk civilisation, Kayseri castle or the 19 th -century Armenian Surup Lusavoriç  church Transfer to Cappadocia, a unique surreal  landscape characterized by tuffstone valleys, underground cities and fairy chimneys of different types.

Day 6. Cappadocia.

Take a flight in a hot air balloon, explore the valleys on foot or visit the open air museums of Göreme and  Zelve .

Day 7. Kayseri-Adana train.

Early transfer to Kayseri to board the train to Adana. The Erciyes Express is the only railway line that crosses the Taurus mountains. It goes through 38 tunnels and over the spectacular Varda Bridge. This bridge was designed and built by İmperial German engineers in 1912 as part of the Istanbul-Baghdad-Hejaz railway project and is still used today.
After arrival in the afternoon explore the Ancient part of the city and hidden gems including the ‘Taş köprü ‘ bridge and Sabancı Merkez Camii (mosque).
Don’t miss the famous Adana Kebap, seasoned minced lamb prepared on a skewer.

Optionally book an extra day and tour to Anavarza castle or the open- air museum Karatepe Aslantaş and Yılan Kalesi (snake castle)

Day 8. Adana-Konya train

Early departure (08.00 hrs) of the Toros Express to Konya where you arrive ca. 14.30.

If you want to visit Çatalhöyük, an ancient Neolithic settlement, 9000 years old, you can get off in Çumra and take a taxi to the Unesco world heritage site. (15 km) On return in Çumra take a bus or another train to Konya.( 44 km/ 45 min)

Explore Mevlana museum and other  museums, mosques and parks in Konya.

Every Saturday evening Sema performances at the Mevlana Culture centre .

In summer on Thursdays in the garden of the Mevlana museum ( Free)

Day 9. Konya-Afyonkarahisar train

As the departure of the train to Afyonkarahisar is 19.00 hrs in the evening  full day to explore Konya and its surroundings.

Optionally book a tour to Kilistra, an awesome Ancient city hewn out of tuff stone that was established during the Hellenistic and Roman periods  ( 50 KM)

After arrival at Çetinkaya train station in Afyonkarahisar at  a. 23.30 hrs.

if you like thermal baths and Spa hotels Afyonkarahisar is the place.

it is also the place for a  day trip to the Phrygian valleys


Day 10 Afyonkarahisar-Denizli train.

Half day to visit the center and fortress of Afyonkarahisar before boarding the train to Denizli departing 14.38 hrs. Arriving at the station in Denizli at 19.33 hrs.

Day 11 Denizli

Denizli is a perfect base for visiting Pamukkale and Hieropolis (16 km)              Ancient Laodikeia ( 8 km) one of the first seven churches  and UNESCO site Aphrodisias ( 80 km) are also nearby.

Day 12. Denizli- Selçuk train

Depending on your program in Denizli you can take the afternoon- or evening train to Selçuk. Arriving 19.45 hrs or 21.45 hrs.

Day 13. Selçuk

Charming Selçuk is a great base for excursions to Ephesus, Milete, Priene, house of mother Mary, the temple of Didyma or Şirince.The St John church and the museum of Ephesus are in located in the center of Selçuk.

Day 14. Selçuk

Another day for the  sightseeing near Selçuk.

Day 15. Selçuk- Onward travel.

After breakfast this train journey ends with onward travel to İstanbul, Izmir or other destinations.
