A journey to the hidden gems of the Black Sea takes you from Trabzon first  to the mountainous landscape of Gümüşhane, a forgotten corner of the country, steeped in history. Silver mines once stood here, and the area was on a trade route. Until the 20 th century Gümüşhane’s population was Greek.( GR Argyroupolis )  They built countless monasteries and churches which are now abandoned. The beautiful ‘ İmera’ monastery has recently been restored. If you are more interested in nature you will also get your money’s worth as the biodiversty in this region is high. The biggest part of this diversity is comprised of butterflies. With their 215 known species, 7 of these are endemic.

From Gümüşhane you will travel further to Erzurum and the phenomenal mountain lanscape of Artvin where Georgian warlords once dominated and waged wars over local mastery while paying guestionable allegiance to the Georgian King , the Arab-Caliph , the Byzantine Emperor or Ottoman Sultan.

At the end of the tour, you’ll take a trip to Maçahel (Camili), a biosphere reserve on the border with Georgia. Here you’ll find the purest honey and two beautiful mosques.
